This project is concerned with the Vocational Education and Training (VET) dimension of trainers, advisers and consultants who have an occupational role concerned with supporting retention and addressing ‘drop-out’ from students and trainees from immigrant communities in compulsory and further education (mainly from 14 to 19 years) contexts. Project will share and exchange tools, strategies, good practices and experiences across the EU partners, focusing on the part played by the education and training of migrant students in the integration process, in Czech Republic, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The main aims of the project are:

Exchanging, analysing and comparing among the partners good examples of policy practices and means concerning education system, career guiding and mentoring throughout the “key figure” of the multicultural consultant.

Sharing, enhancing and further promoting among the partners some successful models, strategies and knowledge in order to prevent the immigrant school drop-out phenomenon.

In this project, that is possible thanks to the support of the European Executive Agency on Education, Audiovisual and Culture under the Leonardo da Vinci Life Long Learning Programme, we will collaborate together with other three European organisations: Slovo 21 (Czech Republic), Salon Strategies (UK) and Rinova (UK).

The course seeks to analyze and explain how the international humanitarian system has to improve the coordination and cooperation between major humanitarian relief agents during complex humanitarian emergencies in these days and what has been done in the past to achieve it. We will describe how the way coordination among organizations is managed has an impact in the overall response to complex humanitarian emergencies. To do that an analysis is undertaken of milestone events and projects aimed at increasing cooperation and coordination within international organizations and the international non-governmental sector. Following this, a historical comparative analysis of Rwanda (April to July/August 1994) and Kosovo (March to mid August 1999) is used as case studies to show the improvements done.

Racism, xenophobia, intolerance, cultural shock takes nowadays different forms and the fight against it must also be diverse. Everyone knows that comics have had for several years and is still having a high power of attraction on children and teenagers. Loads of adults have also recognized that comics still raise their interest as it used to when they were children. It, therefore, constitutes an excellent and fun way of raising awareness on different subject – in our case refugees and refugee issues – amongst people and mainly children and teenagers in Europe.

People of different cultures that have to coexist constitute today’s societies. This situation has generated and is still generating fear, rejection and problems of coexistence which is expressed through racism and xenophobic acts and intolerance against refugees and asylum seekers. The latter need to adapt themselves to their new environment/community or country during their stay whether this is for short or long term but this is only possible if they don’t experience rejection from the people of the asylum countries and get their support. To achieve it, people – children, teenagers, adults – living in the asylum countries have to make an effort to build social relationships that base itself on the cultural diversity of nowadays’ society and on equality in rights and democracy and we think that educating these people and inform them about refugees/asylum seekers’ situation through awareness campaign can help eradicate ignorance that mostly causes rejection of the “others” and promote solidarity and activism. Our campaign was mainly aimed at youth as they can influence the present and future situation and constitutes citizens of the future.

The main goals of the project were:

Spread awareness on refugee and refugee issues among youth aged between 12 and 25 years old

Make available a material that will help spread awareness on refugees in the long term among youth and adult

Promote a multicultural society, tolerance and activism among youth

We have prepared a comic book dealing with different aspects of a refugee/asylum seeker’s life (such as living in a refugee camp, resettlement, fleeing their own country, etc.). The comic was printed out in eight different languages and distributed through our partners to schools, student associations, universities, NGOs working with children, etc. of eight different countries (Switzerland, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Slovenia, Portugal and Spain). The purpose of this project was to spread awareness in a fun way about refugees and refugee issues amongst European children, teenagers, young adults and adults.
